I was discussing just the other day just how easy it is to talk yourself out of exercise. We’ve all thought about it. Often we want to, or get asked to stay late at work to finish a project, or we persuade ourselves the traffic will be awful so what’s the point, or we get home, sit on the couch and promise ourselves we’ll go tomorrow, that tomorrow will be different. Not going is easy!
What’s not so easy is dealing with the effects of continual procrastination. Maybe you’ve gained a few kg’s or the scale has tipped so far over that you’re embarrassed about how out of shape you are. It could be you feel tired all the time and working up the energy to move feels too hard. Perhaps you don’t move as well as you used to, and getting up and down off the floor is to be avoided so you don’t feel silly. Often it’s because of past injuries holding you back, or fear of getting injured again.
The thing is, and I hear it almost daily so I know it’s real, is that without doubt we always feel better after moving our bodies. My clients know that I will always modify their session to how they are feeling on any given day. A quick message in the morning that they’re feeling overstressed means I’ll throw out the scheduled plan and we’ll do yoga & meditation, so they leave the session energised and not depleted. When you can workout to match your mood, you’re far less likely to procrastinate because you know you will always leave your session feeling awesome. When you make a decision to commit to yourself before you know it, the weight starts falling off, your energy increases, moving becomes easier and as you get stronger those old injuries can disappear.
When you flip the script and workout to reward yourself instead of punishing yourself, your results will be so much greater, and oddly enough the urge to procrastinate reduces.
We all feel better when we know we look good, and the better we feel, the better choices we make. Your health and fitness is not a race, there are no quick fixes. It’s about developing healthy habits and incorporating them into your lifestyle.
